All successful candidates will be notified by email offering either a place at the open day or vacation scheme or offering an interview date for those wanting to join the firm as a trainee. Trainees will be interviewed by partners and given the opportunity to ask questions. Successful candidates are usually notified within a week of their interview.

Who can apply?
You will need three A levels (AAB) or 136 UCAS points. You must be predicted or have obtained at least a 2:1 degree. For the open day, you need to have completed your first year of undergraduate degree. For the vacation scheme, you will either be in the penultimate or final year of your degree, or have graduated. For a trainee position, you will either be in final year of your degree or have graduated.

If you are interested in becoming a patent attorney you must have, or be studying for, a degree in a STEM subject including physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering or maths. There are no academic subject matter restrictions for those considering the trade mark attorney profession. For international students, we will expect the equivalent national qualifications.

Application tips

  • Your covering letter and CV are important. The covering letter is your opportunity to convey your personality and explain why your achievements and interests indicate the potential to excel and thrive in this career. Your CV should be easy to scan so keep formatting simple. One or two pages is ideal. Highlight your achievements and explain any gaps in the timeline.
  • Do your homework. Find out about the firm, your interviewer and understand how the broader commercial environment impacts the intellectual property world. Be commercially aware and get up to speed with the latest industry news.
  • Prepare for your interview. Listen to the questions. Be ready to explain why you want to join this firm and ask us some questions too. Remember we want you to succeed and will be there to offer you help during the interview process. We were in your shoes at one point, so we understand the nerves but try to relax.
