I’m a Partner with a great deal of experience in polymer chemistry and small molecule pharmaceuticals. I really enjoy my work and I am proud of the success I have achieved both personally and for my clients.
I enjoy working and interacting with my clients, which range from a leading American chemical and plastics manufacturer to small pharmaceutical firms, including several clients in the US and UK. My time is generally divided between Oppositions and Appeals work and contentious proceedings on the one hand and drafting patent applications and prosecuting them through to grant on the other. I find the Opposition and Appeals work, and the higher pressure that comes with it, especially interesting.
Being able to make a difference to my clients’ work matters hugely to me. Supporting a client in reaching their ambitions and finding solutions they might not be aware of is always fulfilling. I’m very thorough and I take pride in providing a good service. Acquiring a good result at oral proceedings by obtaining the required scope of coverage or getting competitors’ patents revoked are definite highlights of my work. Achieving a successful result for clients and knowing they’re happy with the outcome is not only hugely satisfying but also leads to repeat business.
I like overcoming objections that the patent examiners may challenge us with in writing or at a hearing. It’s rewarding to be able to explain clearly why such a challenge is incorrect or to successfully find the right claim amendment that deals with the issue. This requires having a very good understanding of the technical subject matter and the law and being able to apply both at the same time.
I’m also involved in training here at Boult, which is enjoyable because it’s so gratifying to have the opportunity to pay the firm back in this way. I received excellent training when I joined the firm and have always found more senior colleagues to me to be very approachable and generous with their time and advice. Boult is both a fantastic place to initially learn the profession and to continue to grow your career.
