I have over 20 years’ experience in the field of intellectual property and a background in IT consulting and software engineering.

Having worked in industry as an IT consultant at Logica, I have first-hand experience of clients’ IP objectives. Later, as a software research engineer at Sony working on video processing and cryptography, I was an inventor on around 50 patent families, so I know how to work with inventors and speak their language, getting around a whiteboard and guiding them through the IP process. I make the most of this background to ensure that our clients’ experiences are as positive, accessible and straightforward as possible.

I mostly focus on areas of technology that lie close to the border between patentable and non-patentable subject-matter: software, algorithms, machine learning, business methods, mathematics, etc. Many of my clients work in emerging technologies that push the limits of what is or is not patent-eligible, and that call for creative solutions to successfully navigate the IP challenges they bring.

I work for a diverse range of clients, from large multinationals to universities and smaller, more local businesses. With a passion for maths, software and IT, anything remotely related to these fields piques my interest: artificial intelligence, cryptography and data security, database management and optimisation, audio/video processing, data compression and network communications, to name but a few.

Recent experience

Acting for a large multinational company to grow and manage its substantial worldwide patent portfolio relating to digital content protection, software security and securing the implementation of machine learning deployments.

Assisting a growing company to develop its patent portfolio focused on the use of artificial intelligence to improve the operation and safety of autonomous vehicles.

Working closely with a network/communications client to help grow its existing patent portfolio so that it is well positioned to leverage and enforce its patent rights in contentious proceedings across Europe.

Navigating the frontier of patentable vs non-patentable subject-matter for a multinational organisation seeking to protect its inventions, based on technologies such as blockchain and neural networks for business-driven contexts and commercial goals (a notoriously difficult patent arena in Europe).
