My practice focuses on inventions in the fields of inorganic and materials chemistry, with a particular emphasis on electronic materials, coatings, alloy technology and catalysis. I like to build effective working relationships with clients by understanding their commercial requirements.

I enjoy working collaboratively with my clients, and I aim to “add value” rather than simply doing what I’m asked to do. In particular, I like to be proactive in flagging up an opportunity with a patent portfolio and in addressing any potential problems. Providing little extras that aren’t necessarily patent-related assist in this.

Having spent five years in a chemistry laboratory conducting research for my degree and doctorate, I love having the opportunity to meet with researchers and hear about what they’re doing and why.

My expertise lies in portfolio management, drafting and contentious proceedings including Oppositions and Appeals. I started my career at another firm before joining Boult and have found the collaborative environment here to be a big difference between the firms and hugely refreshing.

I am delighted to be Chair of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Law Group. We aim to educate our members on aspects of the law relating to chemistry and run events directed to a variety of audiences such as students, chemistry researchers and legal experts. We also advise the Society on issues involving the interaction of chemical science and the law.

Intellectual property can be an alien concept to many, including those in research roles who are coming up with new inventions and pushing technology forward. It’s great to be able to explain how we can protect their hard work by doing what we do. We’re here to take the clever things that people have done and turn them into commercially useful assets that can help take their business to another level.

Recent experience

Acting for a UK-based catalyst company at opposition oral proceedings at the European Patent Office resulting in a competitor’s commercially important European patent being revoked in its entirety.

Managing a patent portfolio of an international company providing speciality chemicals for the surface finishing industry.

Assisting a large US-based chemical company in drafting its patent applications and managing its large patent portfolio.
