I’m a Partner with Boult, specialising in engineering and designs. In my team we are comfortable working across the spectrum from incredibly complicated machines to consumer devices. This spectrum includes everything from batteries, computer networks, control systems, downhole tools, smart devices and high-pressure valves, to intra-gastric implants, footwear, sports equipment and office furniture.

While I have a broad range of clients, I particularly relish working with start-ups and companies that might not have been involved in IP before. I enjoy helping them to develop their ideas and explore the potential of what they’ve created. It’s very rewarding to take a new business from the initial gem of an idea on the journey to filing a patent application; you feel like an integral part of the process.

My client base is a great blend of organisations where I’m their main point of contact and I can start to develop our relationship and understand their strategy, goals and ambitions, plus others where I’m part of a larger team. It’s an ideal combination of independence and collaboration but ultimately as a team and as a firm, we’re all about meeting our clients’ needs.

I enjoy the variety of work and the fact that I never stop learning. For example, I work on a number of mechatronics cases, which join the dots between classic mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and programming.

I’ve been at Boult for nearly a decade, and I qualified here. I chose this profession because I love combining my passion for the technical understanding of science and engineering (which I studied at university) with the conceptual thinking and creativity of law. Boult seemed – and indeed has been – the perfect home to pursue this as a career.

I’m proud to be a council member for the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA) having been elected by my peers and I’m particularly focused on helping to ensure that the intellectual property arena continues to be a diverse, inclusive and a welcoming place to work.

Recent experience

Building a patent portfolio of over 50 applications/patents for a smart-home start-up including key IP for the field.

Preparing and filing hundreds of UK designs for a large fashion house to protect its annual releases.

Successfully opposing a series of patents relating to the manufacturing of consumer goods at the EPO.
