I am a Patent Assistant here at Boult. What fascinates me the most about being in the patent profession is how science can be applied daily in what appears to be an uncustomary way, to protect and give commercial value to cutting edge research and revolutionary inventions.

Whilst I first learned about the profession from a friend, it was not until the end of my chemistry degree that I had my first hands-on experience with intellectual property through my patentable work in my final year thesis project. This reinforced my understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of chemistry and the importance of patent law in rewarding, promoting and protecting years of research and hard work. This is what ultimately convinced me that patent law was the perfect fit for me.

As a scientist, it has been incredibly rewarding to learn about the intricacies of our clients’ inventions and take part in the process of transforming ideas and discoveries into impactful technology and products. Just as importantly, from a legal perspective, putting clients’ inventions to paper and communicating effectively with a range of audiences is something that poses its own unique and exciting challenge.

The job of a patent expert is meticulous yet also creative which results from the unique crossover of law, science and business. I feel my eye for detail, analytical approach and clear communication skills are essential tools that allow me to successfully perform this role.

Recent experience

Prosecuting a large portfolio of cases in the polymer and plastics field.

Prosecuting cases involving small molecules and methods of treatment.

Assisting in drafting a patent application in precious metal recovery.

Recording the transfer of rights of patents and patent applications in Europe and overseas jurisdictions.
