  • Certificate in Intellectual Property Law, Queen Mary University of London
  • Master of Physics (MPhys), University of Durham

During my Master’s year, I ran a science outreach project based on quadrupole ion traps. The project aimed to improve children’s engagement with science at school and raise awareness of careers in science at a younger age. I found the public engagement side of the project the most rewarding and, having always enjoyed science, patent law seemed like the ideal way to combine the technical knowledge I learned at university with the client facing and legal aspects of protecting inventions.

I joined Boult shortly after graduating and I qualified with the firm. The range of work that we handle on a day-to-day basis is both interesting and engaging. I find that working closely with our clients is a rewarding experience, particularly where we have encountered and overcome challenging objections from the patent office(s). No two patent applications are ever the same. There is always a new topic to learn about, from airplane wings to the latest medical devices and all things in between.

Recent experience

Assisting in a recent EPO opposition hearing representing the patentee against two opponents, resulting in the patent being maintained in amended form, the subject-matter related to robotic arm support systems that aid users with weakened muscles against the effects of gravity.

Assisting an SME client with its growing patent portfolio in the area of sensing devices, including drafting a new application and providing advice on obtaining international protection (including Australia, Canada, China, Europe, Japan and the US).

Assisting with early preparations for upcoming hearings for a global medical company, including reviewing prior art and providing opinions on novelty/inventive step. Additionally, helping with reviewing its current applications to propose subject matter for potential new divisional applications.
